Farm Family of the Day: MariBees Boer Goats

Farm Family of the Day, sponsored by Tractor Supply Co., is a program that recognizes one standout farm family each day of the N.C. State Fair. To honor these families’ accomplishments and contributions to North Carolina agriculture, they are awarded tickets to attend the fair on a day of their choosing, where they will be recognized through PA announcements and signs on the fairgrounds.

Today, the N.C. State Fair and Tractor Supply Co. congratulate Rockwell’s MariBees Boer Goats. Established in 2022 by Marianna Harrison, with the help of her sister Emma Harrison, MariBees began when Marianna’s interest in showing goats took off and she purchased her first set of does and a buck.

Over the years, the herd has grown exponentially in both quantity and quality. MariBees in Rockwell is currently running nearly 20 Boer goats from North Carolina and Georgia. These goats are raised and bred to produce show stock, boasting exceptional genetics to attract talented show participants.

“The goal when we first started MariBees was to breed quality show Boer goats to help enthusiastic kids get in the ring and have fun,” said Marianna. “We have more goats competing in this year’s N.C. State Fair livestock shows!”

MariBees uses their goats for more than just showing. In April, they added dairy goats to the herd, and their milk is now used in a soap business. Marianna’s mother, Meredith, oversees soap production, while Marianna milks the dairy goats.

The Harrison family loves farming because it’s something the whole family can be part of for generations to come.

“Farming has always been part of our lives, so it’s a lifestyle we hold close to our hearts,” said Marianna. “The agriculture industry is a wonderful community, and fellow farmers are always willing to help each other. I’ve learned so much since starting MariBees Boer Goats.”

Additionally, the Harrisons are big fans of the N.C. State Fair. Between the electric environment, educational and interactive learning opportunities for kids and top-notch agricultural promotion, fair season is a standout time of year.

“In the past few years, we have made the barns at the N.C. State Fair our home, from showing dairy cattle to market goats,” said Marianna. “It’s a great place to feel safe while having tons of fun. Plus, getting to spend so much time with family is the icing on the cake.”

The Harrisons are honored to be named Farm Family of the Day. They hope this title helps them promote MariBees while educating fairgoers about the Boer goat industry and showing goats. Education is one of their core values, and the Harrisons continuously strive to teach others.

Marianna has spoken to many industry professionals about their herd at community events, the St. John Grange and agriculture classes. She has also shared her knowledge of the meat goat industry with third and sixth graders on occasion.

Congratulations to MariBees Boer Goats! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Farm Family of the Day feature.
