by | Feb 19, 2024

Our Got to Be NC Program has many members, from sauce and snack companies to farmers and food businesses. Over the last year we have seen the program continue to grow each month with new members from across the state. In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting the most recent Got to Be NC members that are owned by Black families or individuals. Each one of these companies work hard to produce the best products for their customers. We are honored to have them as members of our Got to Be NC program and look forward to helping them expand their product lines across the state. Try their products for yourself this month by ordering online on their websites, messaging them on social media, or finding their products at a retailer near you!

(1) Root Flavors – Triangle Area

Root Flavors is a sweet potato chip company that services the greater Triangle area, including Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Holly Springs. The owner of the company, Stephen, enjoyed sweet potatoes in a variety of ways growing up. He always enjoyed the taste of them, including the ways that his family would season the potatoes. In his adult years, Stephen found it difficult to find a sweet potato chip that captured those flavors. Thus, Root Flavors was born.

Currently Stephen and his team have released two flavor profiles of the sweet potato chips: Cinnamon & Spice, and Garlic & Cayenne. It’s been said that these chips are slightly addictive once you start eating them. In the words of Lays, “you can’t eat just one.” Order some today on their website and let us know what you think!

Sweet potatoes are one of our state’s most popular commodities. They have been grown in our state for many years and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways: including chips, baked, casseroles and more. The most common variety of sweet potatoes are Covingtons, or orange flesh sweet potatoes. White flesh sweet potatoes, Bonitas, and purple flesh sweet potatoes, Murasaki’s, are also grown at various farms across North Carolina. Keep an eye out for them in your local retailers.
