Destination Dining in Saxapahaw

by | May 5, 2022

Nestled in the heart of Alamance County and about an hour’s ride from the Triangle is a dining destination that is sure to make your mom smile. Since 2008, the Saxapahaw General Store has been serving up breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner to crowds that visit for its farm-to-table fresh menu options and community charm.

“Jeff and Cameron took over an old gas station in the middle of nowhere and turned it into a destination,” said Orin Shepherd, marketing and communications coordinator for the Saxapahaw General Store. “Jeff was a butcher and Cameron a teacher and baker. They embrace the farm-to-table concept, sourcing many of their ingredients from local farms, many located within a mile of the restaurant.”

There are 30-plus farms in the area providing eggs, beef, pork, lamb, goat, milk, lettuce, mixed greens and other seasonal products to the restaurant.

“We are known for our huge menu,” said Shepherd. “Our menu items are based on what we are locally sourcing. We have pork shoulder, duck confit, roasted chicken, pan seared scallops and more – our specials change daily. We are also known for our burgers. We not only have beef burgers but offer goat, lamb, bison, emu and a housemade veggie burger. Although our Mother’s Day brunch menu is not set yet, you can expect to find dishes like duck over toast in cream sauce and French toast.”

The Saxapahaw General Store does not take reservations. However, you can visit the store while you wait. More than 20 local artists are featured in the artwork, jewelry and crafts located in the store. The store also offers local sauces, rubs, honey and other specialty products. Also available is one of the largest selections of craft and local beers in Alamance County.

Another great reason to make a visit soon? Starting May 7, Saturdays in Saxapahaw return. The festivities start at 5 p.m. and include local bands, a farmers market, handmade arts and crafts and more.

“Saxapahaw is a great place to spend the day,” said Shepherd. “In addition to the General Store you can visit the Haw River Ballroom, Haw River Farm House Ales, Freehand Market, walk on our trails near the river or rent a kayak at nearby Haw River Kayak and Canoe. To make a weekend of it, try AirBnB or VRBO to find different farms in the area that offer R.V.s, trailers and tiny houses as lodging.

Although a Saturday or Sunday is a great time to make a family trip to celebrate Mom at the Saxapahaw General Store, Shepherd points out the weekdays are a little less crowded.

“If you want to beat the crowds, it’s best to come during the week.”

The Saxapahaw General Store is located at 1735 Saxapahaw Bethlehem Church Road. Hours are Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
