The Blackbird Restaurant originally opened in Black Mountain but was relocated to the heart of downtown Asheville in 2012. Current owner and chef Michael Reppert prides himself on sourcing ingredients from North Carolina farmers, seafood/aquaculture producers, breweries, distilleries and other agriculture industry professionals to create a seasonal and ever-changing menu based on local flavors. His top priority, however, is freshness and sustainability of product. “I like to source local as much as possible because it promises a quality and fresh product,” he said, ” but more important than sourcing local products is investing in sustainable products that are grown and raised under the best practices possible.”
Being located in such a booming area gives the Blackbird Restaurant a unique experience for customers and a variety of things to see and do before or after the meal. “We are often referred to as a New American restaurant with southern flare,” Chef Michael said. “I work hard to make it a welcoming and casual atmosphere with high-end, delicious food.” Downtown Asheville is only a walk away from the Blackbird Restaurant if you are looking for an afternoon shopping adventure with mom. The restaurant is also located near the Diana Wortham Theater, the Fine Arts Cinema and other Fine Arts galleries, The Orange Peel, Pack Square Park and the French Broad Food Co-Op.
Brunch is a very popular meal most days at the Blackbird Restaurant and is definitely a highly coveted time-slot for families on Mother’s Day. This year, Michael and his team will create a Mother’s Day brunch menu to offer all the crowd favorites as well as throw in some local entrées that showcase the flavor and flare of Western North Carolina. “Our brunch is very popular and always crazy busy,” said Chef Michael, “so I suggest making reservations for Mother’s Day this year. I have started thinking of ideas for the menu but I don’t have everything figured out yet because I usually like to plan out my menu week to week so that everything is as fresh and seasonal as it can be.” In other words, customers will just have to wait and be surprised with some of the dishes created for their Mother’s Day menu.
The Spinach and Goat Cheese Omelet is a brunch crowd favorite every weekend. It consists of three locally sourced eggs, local goat cheese, spinach, roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions, sausage or bacon, grits or Sunday potatoes and a buttermilk biscuit. If you are looking to try a Chef favorite this weekend, Michael suggests the Stuffed Brioche topped with cinnamon, Farm Breakfast or Fried Chicken and Biscuits. “If you’re looking for something simple and delicious to start the day, you can never go wrong with the Farm Breakfast that consists of two local eggs, grits or potatoes, Apple Wood Smoked bacon or sausage and a biscuit,” he said. “However, if you are looking for a unique experience that will leave you in a definite food coma, the Fried Chicken and Biscuits with gravy and eggs is a must try.”
No matter what dish you choose to try this weekend for Mother’s Day, Chef Michael promises fresh, high-quality ingredients that will leave your taste buds singing. He is currently working with a lot of ramps, mushrooms, strawberries and softshell crabs from local farmers across the state. “By working with our community to source our restaurant, we are building relationships and supporting good food at it’s roots,” he said. “This ensures that our food is fresh and a true reflection of Western North Carolina.” He works with a variety of farmers and agriculture producers throughout the year, including Crow Fly Farms in Marion.
