Today’s Topic: The NC Food Processing Innovation Center

by | Aug 22, 2017

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”

Over the past three years, North Carolina has been working to boost food manufacturing in the state. The goal is to create jobs and build North Carolina’s agricultural economy. The NCDA&CS has been working with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N.C. State University, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and other partners in a variety of ways to increase the number of food manufacturing companies in the state.

In the 2017 legislative session, the General Assembly provided funding to create the Food Processing Innovation Center. The center will be located at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. This center will be a major resource that can support food manufacturers of all sizes in North Carolina.

The department has been an advocate for developing the center and helped secure funding from the legislature in the state budget. Commissioner Troxler is chair of the center’s advisory committee.

A joint study by the department and N.C. State in 2014 predicted that food manufacturing could contribute an additional $10 billion in state income and add 38,000 jobs in less than 10 years. The center will play a role in making that prediction come true. The center can help North Carolina food businesses develop and grow, and help with the recruitment of food businesses from elsewhere.
