Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
The 13th annual Commissioner’s Food Safety Forum is coming up Aug. 15 at the State Fairgrounds. The forum will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Expo Center. Admission is free, and lunch will be provided. The forum is sponsored by Harris Teeter.
If you’re interested in attending, please pre-register online so we’ll have an idea of how many people we’ll need to feed.
Here’s what’s on the agenda:
- Roland McReynolds, executive director of the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, will talk about the importance of small farms using training collaborations so they can comply with new federal food-safety rules.
- Chuck Ross, director of extension for the University of Vermont, will give an update on implementation of those federal rules, which are the result of the Food Safety Modernization Act.
- In addition, Dr. Steven Taylor, founder of the food allergy research program at the University of Nebraska, will talk about incorporating allergen controls in food-processing facilities.
- And Dr. Clint Stevenson, assistant professor of food science education at N.C. State University, will demonstrate how he brings the food processing plant into the classroom using virtual reality training.
If you have questions about the forum, please contact Derek Wagner at 919-707-3011.
