Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
If you’re interested in entering a competition at the 2017 N.C. State Fair, it’s almost time to start signing up. Online registration for the competitions opens Aug. 1.
To celebrate the 150th N.C. State Fair, several competitions will feature a special theme, including the Flower and Garden Show, Essay, Decorated Cakes and Kids Cookie Decorating competitions.
Other competitions include the Rabbit Photo Contest, the Great American Spam Championship and the “Almost Anything Goes” Clothing Contest. That one allows participants to enter articles of hand-crafted apparel that don’t fit into other categories.
The N.C. State Fair features thousands of competitions in a bunch of different categories, including home canning and food preservation, art, needlecraft and sewing, woodworking, gardening, music and dance, showing livestock, cooking and many others. Some competitions are designed just for young people, while others are open to everyone.
All the information is contained in the State Fair Premium Book, which you can find online. The premium book tells you everything you need to know about entry guidelines and deadlines. Contest listings are divided into two categories: livestock and general entries.
