Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
The General Assembly will convene a special session today to consider funding for disaster relief related to Hurricane Matthew, which hit Eastern North Carolina, and the wildfires that affected the N.C. mountains this fall.
The purpose of the special session is to address immediate needs. Legislators have indicated they will tackle long-term needs during their regular session, which begins Jan. 11.
The NCDA&CS has requested $38 million for immediate agricultural needs related to the hurricane, such as removing debris from streams and repairing farm roads, ponds and dams. The department also would like to recover some of the costs it incurred fighting the wildfires.
Commissioner Troxler says the department will continue to work with the ag community to determine additional recovery needs for legislators to address in their 2017 session.
