May is a great time to visit N.C. farmers markets

Strawberry season is in full swing across the state, and other fresh produce is right behind as we get closer to the summer harvest. May is a great time to visit our state-operated farmers markets in Asheville, Charlotte, Colfax and Raleigh. Enjoy the fresh produce, and celebrate the season with these great upcoming events:

The state-operated farmers markets in Charlotte, Colfax and Raleigh will host Strawberry Days in May. Stop by for free samples of strawberries on select days.

Strawberry Day, State Farmers Market, Raleigh
Fresh, local strawberries are in season and readily available. Stop by the State Farmers Market May 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for free samples of strawberries and strawberry ice cream. Bakers can also try their hand at the strawberry dessert contest. Contest rules are available here.

Strawberry Day, Robert G. Shaw Piedmont Triad Farmers Market, Colfax
Those in the Triad won’t miss out on the strawberry fun. The Robert G. Shaw Piedmont Triad Farmers Market will host its Strawberry Day May 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free strawberry samples and a strawberry dessert contest are all part of this event. Dessert contest rules are available here.

25th Spring Herb Festival, WNC Farmers Market, Asheville
More than 55 herb businesses from North Carolina and the Southeast will be on hand for this three-day event, May 2-4. A large selection of herb plants, books, soaps, medicinal herbs, lotions and other herbal products will be available for purchase.

Strawberry Day, Charlotte Regional Farmers Market, Charlotte
Strawberries will also be celebrated Friday, May 9, at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market. Guests will enjoy free strawberry samples from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and there will be plenty of fresh strawberries available for purchase, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Vidalia Onion Day, WNC Farmers Market, Asheville
There’s nothing quite like the sweet taste of Vidalia onions. Stop by the market Friday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for free samples of onion rings. Visitors can also enter a prize drawing for a bag of Vidalia onions, food products and other gifts.
