Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
The Southeast Regional Partnership for Planning and Sustainability is meeting April 23 and 24 at Camp Lejeune to address a variety of topics in six action areas: Working Lands; Off-Installation Military Mission Protection; Threatened, Endangered and At-Risk Species; Climate; Marine and Coastal; and Renewable and Emerging Energy.
SERPPAS was founded in 2005 and involves federal and state agencies, the military and universities in six Southeastern states. The organization’s mission is to protect working lands – such as farms, fisheries and forests – that are close to military bases. Protecting these lands will allow the military the space it needs for training, says Commissioner Troxler, who serves as co-chair of the group.
North Carolina’s identity is closely related to military and agriculture, and they are the state’s two largest industries. SERPPAS and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services already have a strong working relationship. And over the next two days, there will be even more sharing of ideas to expand that relationship.
