WRAL reporter Brian Shrader and our own Lisa Prince feature seasonal recipes in their Got to Be Good Cookin’ segment using ingredients grown and available right here in North Carolina.
It’s almost strawberry season in North Carolina. Growers in the Sandhills should begin picking in mid-April and Central Piedmont growers will begin picking later this month. In recognition of strawberry season, Brian and Lisa are whipping up some strawberry recipes for you and your family to try.
They start things off with this recipe for Strawberry Scones. A cup of capped and chopped fresh strawberries add sweetness to this biscuit-like breakfast item. Lisa recommends serving them with butter, Greek yogurt or lemon cream. To make the lemon cream, combine 4 ounces of soft cream cheese, 3/4 cup vanilla yogurt, 1 teaspoon N.C. honey, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and 2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon zest.
North Carolina is the fourth largest producer of strawberries in the nation with 1,500 acres harvested annually. Many families choose to harvest their strawberries by hand at pick-your-own farms across the state. N.C. Farm Fresh, the department’s online directory for farms, farmers markets and roadside stands, has more than 200 listings for pick-your-own strawberry farms across the state.
