Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
One of the highlights of the State Fair’s opening weekend was the Junior Livestock Sale of Champions. Exhibitors walked away with a total of $89,600 at the sale. The auction featured the grand and reserve-grand champions from the junior steer, barrow, lamb, goat and turkey shows.
The grand champion junior market steer was shown by Bill Jones of Buncombe County. Jones also showed the N.C. Born and Bred steer.
Mackenzie Cox of Onslow County showed the grand champion junior market barrow. At 3 years old, she was the youngest exhibitor in the auction.
In the meat goat categories, the grand champion was shown by Hanna Alexopoulos of Pasquotank County. The winning meat goat in the N.C. Born and Bred category was shown by Hailey Elmore of Lenoir County.
This year’s grand champion lamb was also the champion N.C. Born and Bred lamb. Heather Goodrich of Sampson County showed the animal.
The grand champion turkey was exhibited by Madison MacFarlane of Wake County.
