Bruce Shankle was inducted in the Commissioner's Meritorious category.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler inducted three new members into the N.C. State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame Sunday, Oct. 14, at the State Fairgrounds. The 2012 inductees were Major Bond of Hickory, Charles Myron McCoy of Cove City and Edwin Bruce Shankle II of Polkton.

All honorees received a plaque and pin, and will be included in a permanent display in the Livestock Hall of Fame Room in the Jim Graham Building.

“The State Fair livestock shows would not be possible without the support of our new inductees,” Troxler said. “They fully deserve being included with our list of 141 members for the N.C. State Fair Livestock Hall of Fame.”

Major Bond was inducted for his extensive work with the state’s dairy industry. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the N.C. Purebred Dairy Cattle Association and the N.C. Jersey Breeders Association, as well as the American Jersey Cattle Association and the American and Ohio Milking Shorthorn societies. He has shown cattle from his Cherub Jersey Farm in Hickory at the N.C. State Fair since 1979.

Myron McCoy of Cove City was recognized for his contributions to the State Fair beef shows. McCoy also was instrumental in bringing a livestock show to Cove City. He has been a member of the Craven County Cattlemen, East Carolina Showmanship Circuit Board of Directors, N.C. Hereford Association and N.C. Cattlemen’s Association.

The final inductee was Bruce Shankle, who was director of the State Fair livestock shows from 2005 until his retirement in 2011. As director, Shankle helped make the annual Junior Livestock Sale of Champions a premier event at the fair. During his time, the Sale of Champions secured $613,550 in prize money for North Carolina youth.
