Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
There have been several produce-related recalls around the country over the past couple of months, including one involving a North Carolina farm. These recalls, coupled with forthcoming federal rules governing produce safety, prompted the NCDA&CS to plan a workshop for Oct. 3 in Raleigh on protecting your produce business. The workshop will be held at the Agronomic Services Building at 4300 Reedy Creek Road, and it’s designed for anyone who grows, packs or ships fresh produce.
Commissioner Troxler tells Rhonda the goal is to provide produce businesses with the information they need to avoid food recalls, but also to help them be prepared if a recall of their produce happens. The workshop will feature presentations from retailers, food inspectors, extension specialists and department staff. They’ll cover a wide variety of topics, including the economics of a food recall, a retailer’s perspective, everyday produce safety, working with regulators, and rebuilding trust with vendors.
The cost for the workshop is $20, which includes lunch and materials. The registration deadline is Sept. 28. To register, click here to download the application (pdf file), or call Annette Dunlap at 919-707-3117.
