The U.S. Department of Agriculture has a new way for consumers to get answers for their food-safety questions. Ask Karen, a new mobile website and app brings 24-hour customer service directly to your smartphone. Ask Karen allows you to search through a database of more than 1,300 food-related questions or submit your own questions to a virtual representative.
Topic areas in the database include antibiotics, food handling, refrigeration, color of meat and poultry, labeling and packaging. You can search for questions related to a variety of food products including beef, chicken, fruits and vegetables and even turducken.
The mobile website is available for all smartphones at m.AskKaren.gov. In addition, Android users can download an Ask Karen app for their phones. You also can access the database and have a live chat with a food safety specialist on the USDA website.
What do you think? Would you use Ask Karen to answer your next question about food safety?
