“When you want the best, it’s got to be NC!” That’s not a bad slogan to live by, especially when it comes to fresh, locally grown food. You can find a wide selection of local produce, meats and cheeses at a state-operated farmers market near you. In addition, our markets offer special events throughout the year the whole family can enjoy. Here are our picks for the top events going on this week:
1. Strawberry Day
The State Farmers Market in Raleigh will host its annual Strawberry Day celebration Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature plenty of N.C. strawberries, as well as free samples of a strawberry dessert, an appearance by Suzy Strawberry, and free recipes and nutritional information. There also will be a strawberry dessert contest in the morning. Winners will be announced during the midday celebration.
2. Spring Herb Festival
Asheville will be blooming with herbs as the WNC Farmers Market hosts the 23rd annual Spring Herb Festival Friday through Sunday. Visitors can purchase herb plants, books, soaps, crafts and other herbal products from more than 55 herb vendors from across North Carolina and the Southeast. The festival runs Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
3. Master Gardener Day
Twice a month, the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market hosts the Master Gardeners of Mecklenburg County. These trained garden enthusiasts offer free advice for homeowners and professional growers alike. This week, Cooperative Extension Agent Scott Ewers will be available to answer questions related to pest management and disease control.
That’s what’s going on at the state-operated farmers markets, but there are more than 200 local farmers markets across North Carolina. What’s going on at your favorite market this weekend? Leave a comment below and let us know.
