Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
The N.C. Division of Public Health is investigating several cases of E. coli illness that could be connected to the N.C. State Fair. On this week’s “Today’s Topic,” Rhonda talks with Commissioner Troxler about the situation and how State Fair officials are doing everything they can to help investigators determine a source.
The two also discuss additional safeguards that were put in place after an E. coli outbreak in 2004 was traced to a petting zoo at the fair. These safeguards include fencing at animal contact areas to separate animals and their bedding from people, and a prohibition on food, drink and other items in animal contact areas. There also are hand-washing stations near every animal contact area. And there is signage warning of the risks of contact with animals.
