Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”

Southern Farm Network logoCommissioner Troxler talks with Rhonda about the 2011 N.C. Mountain State Fair, which runs Sept. 9-18 at the Western N.C. Agricultural Center in Fletcher. It is one of many county and regional fairs held across the state in late summer and early fall.

Troxler says fairs represent the best of our state, and they are a tradition for many people. They also provide an excellent showcase for agriculture, heritage crafts and home-grown entertainment.

At the Mountain State Fair, there are livestock shows, horticultural exhibits, clogging and music competitions, wood carvers, quilters, soap makers and blacksmiths. The fair also has rides and games, pig races, cooking contests and delicious food.

This year’s fair also marks the unveiling of the renovated and expanded Davis Arena, which will house commercial exhibits during the fair and has a new name, Davis Event Center.
