In the Kitchen with Brian and Lisa: Fried okra

by | Sep 1, 2011

WRAL reporter Brian Shrader and our own Lisa Prince feature seasonal recipes in their Got to Be Good Cookin’ segment using ingredients grown and available right here in North Carolina.

Brian and Lisa wrap up a month of recipes featuring local fruits and vegetables with this one for fried okra. If you’ve never made fried okra before, this is the recipe to try because it’s so simple and quick to prepare. First, the okra is sliced, dipped in buttermilk and coated in white cornmeal. Then, it is deep fried to a golden brown and ready to serve. Fried okra would make a great side dish for your Labor Day barbecue or a snack all by itself.

You can find locally grown okra at farmers markets and roadside stands across the state. But, enjoy this recipe while you can because okra won’t be in season for much longer. To find locations carrying okra near you, go to www.ncfarmfresh.com.
