Introducing the Ag Voices Series

by | Aug 25, 2011

In our new series, Ag Voices, we’ll hear from three sophomores at N.C. State University as they prepare for a career in agriculture over the course of an academic year. The series will highlight what they are learning in the classroom and how they plan to apply those lessons to the challenges facing agriculture in the future.

Daniel Alvey, Matthew Currin and Alycia McLamb are all members of the collegiate chapter of FFA at N.C. State. FFA, formerly known as Future Farmers of America, is part of the agriculture education curriculum in North Carolina. Alvey, Currin and McLamb have all served, or are currently serving, as officers of the state organization. Here’s a little more about each participant in their own words.

Daniel Alvey
My name is Daniel Alvey, and I am a sophomore at N.C. State University majoring in Agricultural Education. I graduated from Madison High School in the class of 2010. I grew up in a small town in Western North Carolina called Mars Hill, which is in Madison County. I am still searching for career possibilities after graduating from N.C. State.

Matthew Currin
A little about myself, I was raised and still live on a family farm in Wendell, North Carolina.  I’ve always had a past in agriculture but didn’t get really involved until my freshman year in high school, where I joined FFA.  I am currently attending N.C. State University and majoring in Agricultural Education with a minor in Horticultural Science.  Outside of agriculture, I am involved with missions with my church and I am also training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai.

Alycia McLamb
I’m the daughter of Phil and Carol McLamb from the small community of Spivey’s Corner, the “Hollerin’ Capital of the World!” I’m from Clinton where I graduated from Midway High School in 2010.  I’m now entering my sophomore year at N.C. State University majoring in Agriculture Education and Agriculture Business Management.  I’m also pursuing a minor in Leadership in Agriculture and Life Science.  I’m a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, the 2011 North Carolina Watermelon Queen, and a 2010-2011 NC FFA State Vice President.Watch McLamb’s introductory video

As the name implies, one of the goals of this series is to share the voices of agriculture. Our first interview covered a variety of topics, from the tobacco buyout to social media. In the video below, the group discusses their thoughts on the challenges facing the agricultural industry now and how they plan to advocate for agriculture in the future.
