Today’s Topic: Food Safety Forum focuses on Food Safety Modernization Act

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”

Southern Farm Network logoThe seventh annual Commissioner’s Food Safety Forum on Aug. 22 focused on implementation of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act.

Commissioner Troxler tells Rhonda it’s important that farmers and other food producers who will be subject to the law understand what lies ahead. He also points out that recalls are agricultural issues in addition to being public health issues. Recalls affect the market, and it takes time for producers to recover.

The successful implementation of the new law will require good partnerships involving everyone from the farm level to the consumer, Troxler says. He also says it’s good that the NCDA&CS is in a position to help influence implementation of the law.
