What’s your favorite summer crop?

Today was Watermelon Day at the WNC Farmers Market. Visitors were able to enjoy free samples of fresh N.C. watermelon, receive nutritional information and take home watermelon recipes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. N.C. Watermelon Queen Alycia McLamb also was on hand to promote local melons. In addition, there were drawings for whole watermelons and other prizes, as well as a seed-spitting contest and watermelon-eating contest for children.

The annual event, sponsored by the N.C. Watermelon Association, WNC Farmers Market and N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, is one of several happening at state-operated farmers markets this summer to promote local agriculture.

If you missed Watermelon Day, there are still plenty of opportunities to celebrate watermelon in July and August. Other events happening this summer include Peach Day, Tomato Day, Grape Day and later this year, Sweet Potato Day.

North Carolina farmers produce a large variety of crops, and we are fortunate to have access to such a variety of safe and healthy food. With so many fruits and vegetables to choose from, we want to hear from you: Which crops are you most excited about seeing at local farmers markets and roadside stands?
