Cheers rang out from the North Portico of the Legislative Building this afternoon as members of the General Assembly competed in the annual milk-chugging competition. The match up featured the Senate Speedy Super Sippers–composed of Sens. Bob Atwater, Don East and Doug Berger–and the House All-Stars–made up of Reps. Efton Sager, William Brisson and Jonathan C. Jordan. After a reading of the rules, the House All-Stars bested the Senate Speedy Super Sippers, clocking in at just less than one minute. Check out the video below:

Each team chugged for charity. For first place, $200 will be donated on behalf of the House All-Stars to the N.C. FFA Foundation. The Senate Speedy Super Sippers earned $100 for the N.C. Friends of Agriculture Foundation.
The competition is designed to highlight the importance of the dairy industry to North Carolina’s economy.
“North Carolina’s dairy industry generates $1 billion for the economy,” said Steven Lathrop, a marketing specialist with NCDA&CS. “It produces nearly 50 percent of all the milk consumed in the state.”
North Carolina has 290 dairy farms with 43,000 milk cows that produce more than 100 million gallons of milk. The state leads the Southeast for most milk production per cow. In addition, the N.C. dairy industry produces 15.9 million gallons of ice cream annually.
