Today’s Topic: Tornadoes damage N.C. farms

by | Apr 19, 2011

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”

Southern Farm Network logoDozens of tornadoes tore through North Carolina on Saturday, destroying homes, businesses and farm buildings, and taking lives. Our hearts go out to the many families affected by the storms.

Rhonda Garrison of Southern Farm Network talked with Commissioner Troxler about the impact of the tornadoes on farms across the state. The tornadoes damaged poultry houses, barns, storage buildings, greenhouses and equipment. One tobacco farm in Cumberland County lost 100 bulk barns.

Crop damage appears to be small because the growing season is just getting under way. But there were reports of damaged strawberry and wheat fields. Farmers in some areas have debris in their fields, which could prevent them from planting crops on time.

Commissioner Troxler is scheduled to view damaged farms in eastern North Carolina today.
