Today’s Topic: Navy suspends plans for outlying landing field in N.C.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”

Southern Farm Network logoLast week the Navy announced it was suspending plans to develop an outlying landing field in northeastern North Carolina. The announcement was welcome news to farm families in Camden, Gates and Currituck counties, which had been under consideration for the practice field.

Commissioner Troxler wrote the secretary of the Navy four years ago to express concern about the Navy potentially taking tens of thousands of acres of prime farmland out of production. It’s something North Carolina cannot afford because the state has been among the nation’s leaders in lost farms and farmland. Lost farms affect the state’s economy and ability to produce a local food supply.

Listen as Commissioner Troxler and Rhonda talk about the Navy’s suspension of its OLF plans.
