Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with the Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
A little-known but important figure in the history of North Carolina agriculture was honored last week with the opening of his restored house.
Commissioner Troxler took part in a celebration to mark the opening of the L.L. Polk House in Raleigh. Polk helped found the state’s agriculture department, and he served as North Carolina’s first Commissioner of Agriculture. He also helped start the colleges that became N.C. State University and Meredith College.
Polk was an Anson County native and cotton farmer who served as a colonel in the Civil War. He later became a newspaper editor and also founded the Progressive Farmer. He championed the cause of the little guy, and he was particularly passionate about the cause of our state’s farmers.
Listen is as Commissioner Troxler and Rhonda Garrison discuss L.L Polk and his advocacy for agriculture.
