Horses line up in Dorton Arena during the 4-H Horse Show in 1981.

Before the Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. Horse Complex was completed in 1983, horse shows such as the 4-H Horse Show pictured above were one of a variety of activities held in the multiple-purpose Dorton Arena. Some horse-related events are held periodically in Dorton Arena, but the majority of the 90 annual horse shows held at the N.C. State Fairgrounds each year take place at the Hunt Horse complex. Currently, the complex staff is preparing for next month’s N.C. State Fair Horse Shows, which is like two events in one. The Hunter and Jumpers show begins Oct. 6 followed by the other breed shows, which last until Oct. 30.
