For the sixth year in a row, The Sod Trotters represented the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at the Komen N.C. Triangle Race for the Cure, held this past Saturday at Meredith College in Raleigh. The event is not only North Carolina’s largest foot race — this year attracting more than 25,000 participants — but it is also the organization’s top event to raise money for education and research to find a cure for breast cancer.
The Sod Trotters were 40 members strong this year, with department members, friends and family making up our team. At least 15 members signed up to run in the competitive portion of the event, and the rest took part in the recreational walks.
On Friday before the race, we held our annual Think Pink Bake Sale, where we raised more than $500. The bake sale brings the team close to our fundraising goal. A big thanks to all the ag folks who donated goodies to sell. Another big thanks to all the co-workers and others in the downtown area who stopped by to pick up treats to power them through their weekend.
According to the Komen organization, breast cancer will affect one in eight women. To find out more about this disease, please visit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
