Stained glass windows depict many beautiful settings, from abstract mosaics and flowers to religious depictions and landscapes. But have you ever seen a stained-glass pig?
Visit the downtown Raleigh location of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and you’ll find just that (along with stained-glass oysters, cucumber, cotton and more) hanging over the front entrance. Commissioner Troxler wanted the downtown location to have an agricultural identity, and NCDA&CS employees Kent Yelverton and Lib Taylor helped execute his vision.
Crafted by Tony Driggers Glass Series of High Point and entirely funded by N.C. commodity associations, it is actually a double layer of stained glass and regular window. Installed on May 24, 2008, the glass is 5 feet tall and 6 feet wide.
Check out the artist rendering and installation photos in the gallery below, and try to spot each of the different commodities – including turkeys, apples, fish, tobacco, Christmas trees and horses, to name just a few – depicted in the glass, and visit the department at 2 West Edenton St. to see it in person.
