An old display created by our Standards Department used to educate people about the work of our Motor Fuels Section.
The Motor Fuels section of our Standards Division is responsible for enforcing motor fuel (both gasoline and diesel) quality standards, heating fuel (kerosene and fuel oil) quality standards and motor oil quality standards. The department also regulates every gas pump at every gas station in N.C. to be sure consumers get what they pay for at the pump. With 6,884 gas stations across N.C. (that’s more than 120,000 gas pumps), it’s a big job.The NCDA&CS has 25 inspectors who inspect about 664 locations (or 8,600 pumps) a month.
Check out this past blog post to watch a video of Sam Cain, one of our inspectors, performing an inspection at a Raleigh gas station. If you come across a defective gas pump or think you’ve been overcharged, call the Standards Division at (919) 733-3313.
