Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler sits down each week with the Southern Farm Network’s Rhonda Garrison to discuss “Today’s Topic.”
Both Congress and the White House are working on proposals aimed at improving food safety in the U.S.
In the U.S. House, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 would give FDA greater regulatory powers, placing a strong emphasis on prevention. While this legislation is important, there are still many areas of concern.
Last week, Commissioner Troxler traveled to Washington, D.C. to voice concerns about the bill to members of Congress. One of his concerns about the bill is that it doesn’t address the integration between federal, state and local governments. He also is concerned about the negative financial impact the legislation could have on small farmers. Listen in as Commissioner Troxler and Rhonda Garrison discuss his trip to D.C. and this important legislation.
